Metal detecting is allowed in designated Oakland County parks but only in designated location and certain times of the year. Oakland County and city parks have their own rules in regards to metal detecting. Check with local authorities for these parks and rules.
Below are typical rules and regulation outlined by most Oakland County Parks
1. You may get the permit at the parks office if they don't have one at the entrance booth. There is no fee and they might just say to go ahead. Unlike State Parks, you may hunt anywhere on land you want except maybe if they have new grass growing. In the county parks, you may not metal detect in the water. The reason is there is fabric under the sand and they don't want it torn.
3. Metal detecting or digging on the manicured sections of grass at the beaches is strictly forbidden.
4. Permits will be issued for the calendar year. However, persons using their permit MUST contact
the Park Office each and every time the permit is used.
5. A list must be prepared and submitted to the Park Office of items found in the park.
6. Persons finding valuable articles who wish to keep the articles in their possession must comply
with the State Laws regarding the finding of valuable property.
7. NO roadside parking is permitted. Permitees must park in open adjacent parking lots and walk to
metal detecting sites.
8. A copy of the permit MUST be on the operators person at all times, while in the park. If your
permit is lost or unreadable, please contact the Park Office as soon as possible for a new one.
9. This permit may be cancelled or suspended by the Officer on duty whenever he/she deems the
activity is conflicting with the rules, or to be injurious and/or dangerous to person or property.
