  • Metal Detecting in Metro Parks

Metal detecting is allowed in designated metro parks but only in designated location and certain times of the year. Metro and city parks have their own rules in regards to metal detecting. Check with local authorities for these parks and rules.

A permit may or may not be required. See the following link for an example permit required by Kensington Metro Park: (Click here) to see permit.

Below are typical rules and regulation outlined by most Metro Parks

1. Metal detecting is allowed yearlong in most areas of the park. Detecting is prohibited at the Farm Center, Nature Center, Nature Trails, Golf Course, manicured sections of grass and at the beaches when they are open for public use (see #2).
2. Use of metal detecting equipment is strictly prohibited at beachs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
3. Metal detecting or digging on the manicured sections of grass at the beaches is strictly forbidden.
4. Permits will be issued for the calendar year. However, persons using their permit MUST contact the Park Office each and every time the permit is used.
5. A list must be prepared and submitted to the Park Office of items found in the park.
6. Persons finding valuable articles who wish to keep the articles in their possession must comply with the State Laws regarding the finding of valuable property.
7. NO roadside parking is permitted. Permitees must park in open adjacent parking lots and walk to metal detecting sites.
8. A copy of the permit MUST be on the operators person at all times, while in the park. If your permit is lost or unreadable, please contact the Park Office as soon as possible for a new one.
9. This permit may be cancelled or suspended by the Officer on duty whenever he/she deems the activity is conflicting with the rules, or to be injurious and/or dangerous to person or property.
10. Persons wishing to metal detect at the Group Camping area, MUST check in at the Park Office before doing so. Metal detecting is prohibited when groups are utilizing the group camping area.

Below are links to each of the Metro Park maps. Note however that not all of these parks allow metal detecting. Again check with local authorities.
