"Hi Folks!
If I am flying or going on a cruise, how do I transport my detector safely?
Thanks,
Inquirer"
Answer from Joe C.: "Consider mailing your detector to the hotel or destination you plan to stay at. It saves the hassle, and it will be ready for you when you get there. You can also take insurance out on it for its full value and not have to worry about arguing with the airlines. Take good photos of your equipment and accessories in case they are lost. Photos will help document the condition and what you had. You may even want to shoot one photo of you with the equipment. Its hard to refute you owned the equipment when you appear with it in a photo. Also see these links:
Answer from Webmaster: I have done it both ways, pre-shipped and packaged in luggage.
Pre-shipping cost-ed me about $45 each way for 2 to 3 detectors to Daytona, FL. Now I just break down units and pack in suitcases making sure I surround them with my clothing for protection. Be careful not to exceed the baggage weight limit of 50 lbs. I have done this at least 3 time now with no problems. Obviously you will need a collapsible water scoop instead of a full handled one or a lite weight digging tool. I have heard some people use a golf bag as well.
As far as traveling outside the country. Try and contact local authorities in each country you visit. When I went on a cruise, I contacted the cruise-line who connected me with their boat dock people. Of coarse, they said it was OK especially at their own resorts. But don't take their word for the rest of the countries you visit. They simply don't know. I have heard some horror stories about people getting their equipment confiscated in some countries where detecting is not allowed. Always check ahead, it's not worth getting thrown in jail for.
